Alder Barn is a family operated business owned and run by Jonathon and Abi, and they aim to bring to you just the sort of holiday home that they would like to stay in themselves with their two girls.
So, this includes generous living accommodation on the ground floor and first floor bedrooms. Facilities for young children, which includes black out blinds in bedrooms, high chairs, travel cot and games and toys. Plus, all the modern facilities that you would expect to find (but so often do not), such as unlimited Wi-Fi broadband, decent sized TV with Netflix and good washing and drying facilities.
Alder Barn is also an ‘extras free zone’ – so everything listed on our website is included and there are no extras or hidden charges; no booking fee, no paying extra for gas and electricity. What you see is what you get – absolutely no extras!
Also, when you arrive to start your holiday, we want you to be able to immediately relax, so there will be milk in the fridge and tea and coffee provided. All rooms will have made up beds and clean towels. We want your holiday to start when you arrive and we aim to make your stay as relaxing as possible.
Located in the village of Ashwell, Alder Barn is lucky to be in such a wonderful position. Ashwell has been described by some as looking like it “came off a film set’ with its Tudor Cottages and Georgian houses, not to mention the amazing 14th century St Mary’s Tower on St Mary’s church.
Surrounded by rolling English countryside you are spoilt for choice for country walks and getting close to nature, or you could visit one of the country pubs, village stores or perhaps Ashwell Gallery which is literally on the doorstep of Alder Barn.
If you prefer to go further afield into Bedfordshire you are spoilt for choice with Woburn Safari park, Whipsnade Zoo, the Shuttleworth Collection and much more.
Remember that London is also well in reach with London Kings Cross being only 40 minutes on the train from Ashwell and Morden Station.

Wrest Park Garden
Wrest Park is managed by English Heritage and showcases three centuries of landscape design with English, Italian, Dutch and French styles side by side over 90 acres of beautiful gardens. Whether you are an enthusiastic gardener or simply looking for a nice picnic spot you won’t be disappointed.
The gardens include dazzling parterres and fragrant borders as well as woodland walks and over 40 statues. It’s not just gardens though, why not discover the Bath house with its thatched roof and a cobbled floor inlaid with a pattern of deer bones or perhaps the ornate marble fountain or Chinese Temple and Bridge.
Moving indoors you can explore the grand Countess’ Sitting Room and conservatory as well as interactive exhibitions. Activity backpacks and audio trails are available for children and if they have any energy left there is a children’s play area.
Facilities include a café with local refreshments and a shop stocked with jams and chutneys, wines, beers, books, garden gifts and more.
Woburn Safari Park
Woburn Safari Park was first opened in 1970 by the 13th Duke of Bedford on the grounds of his Woburn Abbey estate. The animals roam freely through their enclosures while visitors drive through the park. It is home to many different animals including lions, tigers, rhinos, zebras, bears, giraffes and elephants to name a few.
Other attractions include animal talks, petting areas and a high wire adventure course. Smaller animals are housed in the adventure park and include goats, wallabies, ponies, lemurs and reptiles.
For younger visitors there is a soft play centre. The site also includes a family restaurant and gift shop.
Woburn Safari Park is just off junction 13 of the M1, near Milton Keynes.
John O’Gaunt Golf Club
Located at Sutton Park in Sandy, Bedfordshire, John O’Gaunt Golf Club is the county’s premier club and offers two superb and challenging 18 hole golf courses.
The club was established in 1948 and has hosted the English Golf Union ‘Seniors Championship’ on two occasions. Visitors are very welcome to come and play and enjoy a warm and friendly atmosphere at the clubhouse.
